Windows OS: Disable Sounds in Your Browser

Your noisy PC

Picture the scene. You’re listening to downloaded music as you work – lost in the moment with Roy Orbison, his rich voice filling your head through earphones that block out all other sound.

You’re scrolling down a webpage, and BANG! Your heart nearly stops when an advert leaps into life.

Just as bad – or worse, actually – is the embarrassment of your PC making a noise in public.

There you are, perched on a high stool in a trendy coffee shop, researching the subject of e-commerce. You look so cool. You land on a page and … oh god, it’s a video. A jingling cacophony of royalty-free music is joined by an enthusiastic “Hi there!”

You fumble with your controls, glancing around apologetically, cursing your PC – like it had a will of its own.

Take control! Disable that din!

Your PC doesn’t have a will of its own, though. You’re in control. So, let’s have a look at how to silence your PC when you’re using Windows.

If you’re using Windows, you can disable all sounds in your Internet browser by following these 8 steps:

  1. Click on Start
  2. Scroll down and click on Windows System
  3. Select Control Panel from the drop-down menu
  1. Select Network and Internet
  1. Select Internet Options
  1. Click on Advanced (top right)
  2. Scroll through the menu to Multimedia
  3. Deselect Play Sounds in Web Pages

To reinstate the sound, just go through these same steps and select Play Sounds in Web Pages.
